big story tonight. the case against rodger clemens and got underway this morning with opening statements in the district. the prosecution said they have evident, the scientific evidence the former yankee lied to congress. clemens' attorneys fired back claiming the main witness is a liar and paul wagner is here with more. >> reporter: prosecutor steven durham begin the governor's case and saying it was found on needles and cottonballs saved by clemens' former trainer brian mcnamie. needles and cottonballs that contain steroids. he didn't trust clemmens and that is why he saved them. the attorney of clemens said mcnamie manufactured the evidence and has been lying all along to save his own skin. in the opening statement to the jury, the prosecutor said the governor would call 45 witnesses, including the former yankee andy pettitte who will testify that rodger clippens told him on two occasions -- clemensel to him on two occasions he used human growth hormones. and he said the government will prove ashipment of hdh was sent to clemens' home in houston and they have the truth. on

with first degree murder. funeral services meantime for pratt are scheduled for tomorrow. >>> another big story we are following on the news edge at 11:00, a prince george's county mother charged with felony murder after leaving her child alone in a hot car for seven hours. the 2-year-old was found dead strapped in his car seat. fox 5's stacey cohan has the latest on the story. >> neighbors say that 40-year- old karen murphy, they strongly defended her. she's a married mother of three and the commonwealth attorney claims, though, this is not the first time she forgot her child in a car. murphy left her home june 17th to head to work but allegedly forgot her son was strapped in the back seat. she left work around 4 p.m. and drove home never noticing her son ryan was in the back seat. she realized her mistake when her husband called wondering why the boy was not in daycare. meantime the commonwealth attorney says murphy left the boy strapped in the family van back in january but retrieved him quickly when the daycare called her office wondering if ryan was coming in that day. >> the law pro

in detail coming up. >>> you saw in your radar all the rain that moved through and the storms caused big problems for some communities in our area. roz plater was in frederick, maryland, where people have a lot of cleaning up to do now. >> reporter: these pictures capture the essence of just how fast that flash flooding came barreling through downtown frederick, so fast a jogger out for a quick run got trapped on a footbridge in baker park. lucky for him a paramedic passing by spotted him and called for help. firefighters had to use a ladder truck to get him to safety and it wasn't just the park. downtown's main artery market street was a watery mess. floodwaters came up over the wheels of some cars, even trucks, something rarely seen in the center of town. >> red rick city seem like it was hit the -- frederick city seem like it was hit the hardest. market street behind us was pretty much under water. had a lot of stalled cars. >> reporter: the flooding followed a rainstorm that pounded the area before. the flooding started about 3:30 in the afternoon but it already started to recede in

to 115 degrees, so we want you to be getting ready for that as that very big heat gets in here really thursday to sunday. one last thing i have to mention, we did cook up a few big storms today and if you're still seeing lightning i want you to see that's coming from the northern neck as we look at radar. the lightning has been unbelievable down there and a persistent storm. it's slowly sinking to the south. the lightning is 60 miles away or so and they go 40,000 feet into the air. when the core of this big heat gets here, and again it's hot already. we'll let you know how high the temperatures will go with the full forecast. >> i can't imagine it getting worse. that's the scary thing about this. >> i know, and the number of days in a row and the fact the nights are close to 80 degrees is not good. >> you have the right today. i wish i didn't have the jacket on. >> tomorrow will be a new day. >>> speaking of the heat, the heat wave heading our way has already proved deadly in other parts of the country tonight. the national weather service says the hot weather is to blame for 13 death

everybody going across the bay bridge right now. it's nice along the shore as well. big heat. this has been building the last couple of days. let's look to st. louis, because i like the look back at st. louis. this is probably where we're going to be tomorrow. 90 degrees for a high temperature. i think they maxed out at 90 for a high today, but always good in this type of situation. look to st. louis. it's usual usually pretty indicative of what we're going to have the next day. wichita, 103, hope we have nothing like that. a little cooler in the central plains there. there's a little cooler air mass that's going to try to make a run for us. what about jowl the fourth around here? >> what we can expect this weekend. we know it's going to get hotter. that's been the trend. much more humidity coming in sunday, sot so much tomorrow, but sunday you'll feel it muggy out there. and with the front coming down on sunday, storms likely all across the area. we need the rain, though, and looks like that will be later on into the afternoon and into the evening. we still think there's a possibility for

or something, and when i looked outside, i saw trees everywhere. >> reporter: big trees. trees that tore down power, telephone and cable lines. so many trees that 44 hours after the storm, some streets were still completely blocked. that slowed down power crews from dominion virginia. it wasn't just trees that were damaged. windows, cars and buildings were smashed by the falling trees. jay williams was in his upstairs bathroom when his wife called everyone to the basement. he would have been crushed by the falling tree had he not moved instantly. >> it went all the way through our master bath where i was. >> right where he was standing two seconds before. >> and when it hit the house, my son i was carrying, we were on the stairs running down to the basement. >> reporter: there is significant damage in three floors of the williams' house, but they feel lucky no one was injured. it may take five months for the home to be repaired. but at least everyone is alive, and arlington officials say no one was injured either because of the sunday storm. in arlington, john henrehan, fox 5 news. >>> a fox
